Creating the Robot for I Am Mother (Netflix): Inside Weta Workshop

Behind the Scenes of Weta Workshop's 'I Am Mother' Robot! (skip to 2s)

I am Mother - Robot Suit

One of the projects at Weta that I'm really proud of being involved. I was one of the main 3d artists who helped in bringing the mother suit to life. We were tasked to 3d model and match the amazing concept art done by Christian Pearce but still be able to fit a person inside. Fortunately for us, the perfomer of the suit is also our project supervisior - Luke Hawker. In that case, we were able to measure every inch of his body, we also had constant fitting to make sure that the suit will work properly and he could still deliver his performance without any problem. The process in making this suit required a lot of techniques & skills - from black foam prototyping, 3d modeling, 3d printing, moulding/casting, engineering, animatronics and painting -And the result is truly amazing! I am Mother is out now on Netflix so check it out if you haven't done so, the film is directed by Grant Sputore.

*I mainly worked on the back, arms and legs. I used Maya and Zbrush for 3d modeling the parts.
